Can a credit card backed by your own money really build your credit score?

It sounds too simple. You lock a fixed deposit, the bank gives you a card, and your CIBIL file starts to grow. Many people assume there must be a catch.

There is no catch in the basic idea. A secured card can build your score. But there are a few risks people miss, and one of them surprises almost everyone.

This guide explains how a credit card against an FD works and whether it builds your score. It also shows where it can go wrong. We also cover how to use one well, and when to move on from it.

If you are new to credit scores, start with our [complete CIBIL score guide](https://getbelong.com/blog/cibil-score/). This article is part of that series.

👉 **Tip:** The deposit protects the bank. It does not protect your credit score. Only your payment habits do that.

## The short answer

Yes. A credit card against a fixed deposit can build your CIBIL score. The bank must report it to bureaus, and you must pay on time.

[HDFC Bank's page on cards against FDs](https://www.hdfc.bank.in/credit-cards/credit-card-against-fd) notes that timely repayment helps build a credit history and score. It also says income proof is not required for such cards.

That makes these cards one of the easiest ways for new-to-credit borrowers to start. The habits you build matter more than the card itself.

## How a credit card against an FD works

A secured card is issued against a fixed deposit you hold with the same bank. The deposit becomes [collateral](https://getbelong.com/blog/collateral-meaning/) for the card.

[Kotak Mahindra Bank explains](https://www.kotak.bank.in/en/stories-in-focus/cards/credit-cards/credit-card-against-fd.html) that the linked FD is lien-marked, meaning it acts as security for the card. It also notes that the lien-marked FD continues to earn interest.

### The key parts

- **The deposit:** You open an FD with the bank, or use one you already have.

- **The lien:** The bank marks the FD so you cannot freely withdraw it while the card is active.

- **The limit:** Your card limit is set as a share of the deposit, as decided by each bank.

- **The card:** It works like a normal credit card for spending and billing.

The card does not spend from your FD. You spend on credit and pay the bill, just as with any card. The FD sits in the background as security.

### Secured vs unsecured cards

Both build credit the same way: by creating a reported account with a payment record. The secured card simply makes it easier to get one.

## Does it build your CIBIL score?

It does, under two conditions. The bank must report the account to bureaus, and you must manage it well.

### Condition 1: It must be reported

A credit card account from a regulated bank is normally reported. Under [the RBI Master Direction on credit information reporting](https://www.rbi.org.in/Scripts/BS_ViewMasDirections.aspx?id=12764), regulated lenders must submit credit data to all credit bureaus.

Still, confirm with your bank before applying. A few months later, check your report to see the card listed.

Our guide on [how to check your CIBIL score for free](https://getbelong.com/blog/cibil-score/check-free/) covers the safe routes. Read the account entry using our guide on [how to read your CIBIL report](https://getbelong.com/blog/cibil-score/how-to-read-cibil-report/).

### Condition 2: It must be used well

A secured card records your behaviour exactly like any other card. On-time payments build your file. Late payments damage it.

[CIBIL notes](https://www.cibil.com/blog/cibil-score-vs-report) that over six months of credit information is generally needed to get a score. So expect a few months of clean use before a first score appears.

## The risk most people miss: the deposit does not protect your score

This is the cautionary heart of this guide. Many people think a secured card cannot hurt their credit, because the bank has their money.

That is not how it works. [IndusInd Bank's guide](https://www.indusind.bank.in/iblogs/fixed-deposit/credit-cards-against-fixed-deposit-guide/) notes that on default, the bank may break your FD to recover dues. You may lose interest too.

Recovering the money protects the bank. It does not undo the missed payment in your payment history.

### Why late payments still count

A secured card is still a credit card account. Lateness on it is measured and reported like any other card.

The RBI's three-day rule for credit cards applies here too. Under [RBI's credit card directions](https://www.rbi.org.in/Scripts/NotificationUser.aspx?Id=12620), a card can be reported past due only after more than three days.

After that, the lateness counts from the original due date. The deposit sitting in the bank does not change this.

### What happens if you ignore the bill

You lose on three fronts at once. A late mark enters your report and fees pile up. The bank may also break your FD to recover dues.

So a secured card can leave you with a damaged credit file and a smaller deposit. That is the opposite of what you opened it for.

👉 **Tip:** Set auto-pay for the full amount from day one. Treat the secured card exactly like an unsecured one.

## The utilisation trap on small limits

Secured cards often come with small limits, because the limit is tied to your deposit. Small limits make utilisation easy to push up.

[Bajaj Housing Finance suggests](https://www.bajajhousingfinance.in/resources/how-credit-applications-impact-cibil-score) keeping utilisation below about 30% of your total limit. On a small card, even one large purchase can push you far above that.

### How to stay safe on a small limit

- Use the card for one or two small recurring bills only.

- Pay during the month, not just on the due date.

- Move large purchases to a debit card or savings.

- If you need a larger limit, add to the deposit rather than overspending.

The goal is a clean, low-balance record. A card that is always near its limit looks stretched, secured or not.

## Costs and trade-offs to weigh

A secured card is not free in every sense. Weigh these before applying.

### Your money is locked

The FD stays under lien while the card is active. You cannot freely withdraw it.

That reduces your [liquidity](https://getbelong.com/blog/liquidity-meaning/). Do not use your emergency fund as the deposit, because you may need it at short notice.

### The opportunity cost

Money in an FD earns FD interest, which is usually modest. If it is locked to secure a card, there is an [opportunity cost](https://getbelong.com/blog/opportunity-cost-meaning/) compared with other uses.

For most first-time borrowers, a small deposit is a reasonable price for a clean credit start. Just keep it proportionate.

### Card charges

Check the joining fee, annual fee, finance charges and late payment charges before applying. Some secured cards are lifetime-free, others are not.

Interest on unpaid card balances is expensive, secured or not. Pay in full to avoid it entirely.

### FD interest and tax

Your FD keeps earning interest under lien. That interest is taxed like normal FD interest.

Our guide on [savings accounts vs fixed deposits](https://getbelong.com/blog/savings-vs-fixed-deposits/) explains the basics. For deposit options, see our pages on [Canara Bank FD rates](https://getbelong.com/blog/canara-bank-fixed-deposit-rates/), [Union Bank FD rates](https://getbelong.com/blog/union-bank-fixed-deposit-rates/) and [high interest FDs](https://getbelong.com/blog/high-interest-fds/).

Other banks also offer secured cards. Compare deposits with our pages on [Yes Bank FD rates](https://getbelong.com/blog/yes-bank-fd-rates/), [DCB Bank FD rates](https://getbelong.com/blog/dcb-bank-fixed-deposit-rates/) and [Indian Overseas Bank FD rates](https://getbelong.com/blog/indian-overseas-bank-fd-rates/).

Note that secured cards are generally issued against bank FDs held with the card issuer. Our explainer on [corporate FDs vs bank FDs](https://getbelong.com/blog/corporate-fds-vs-bank-fds/) explains why the two are different products.

## A composite story: Rohan's first card

Here is a composite of cases we see. Rohan, a 24-year-old engineer in Hyderabad, opened a secured card against a small FD in his first job.

For three months, it went well. Then he bought a laptop on it, pushing the balance near the limit. He also missed the due date by a week while travelling.

The bank did not touch his FD. But his report now showed a late month and high utilisation. He set auto-pay, moved big purchases to his debit card, and spent the next year rebuilding a clean streak.

If you are at the same stage, this is also a good time to start investing alongside your credit. The [Belong](https://getbelong.com/) app can help with that side.

## When to move on from a secured card

A secured card is a starting point. Once your file is established, you have options.

- **Ask about an unsecured card** from the same bank after a solid run of clean history.

- **Keep the secured card open** if it is fee-free, because it may become your oldest account.

- **Close it properly** if it has fees and you have better cards. Clear dues, get written confirmation, and ask the bank to release the lien.

Whether a bank upgrades or converts a secured card depends on its own policy. Ask directly rather than assuming.

For the wider plan, read our guide on [how to improve your CIBIL score](https://getbelong.com/blog/cibil-score/how-to-improve-cibil-score/). Avoid applying for several new cards at once, as our guide on [hard vs soft enquiries](https://getbelong.com/blog/cibil-score/hard-enquiry-vs-soft-enquiry/) explains.

## For NRIs: secured cards and NRI deposits

This section is for readers living outside India. Resident Indians can skip ahead.

Your foreign credit history does not appear in Indian bureaus. If you plan to return or buy property in India, a secured card can start your Indian file.

### Which deposit?

NRIs usually hold deposits in NRE or NRO accounts. Our guide to [NRO and NRE fixed deposits](https://getbelong.com/blog/nro-and-nre-fixed-deposits/) explains the difference. Ask your bank whether it issues secured cards against these deposits.

You can compare NRI deposit rates on our [NRI FD rates tool](https://getbelong.com/tools/nri-fd-rates/).

### Tax on the deposit

Interest on NRO deposits is taxable in India, while NRE interest is treated differently. Our guides on [FD taxation for NRIs](https://getbelong.com/blog/fd-taxation-for-nris/) and [tax on fixed deposits for NRIs](https://getbelong.com/blog/tax-on-fixed-deposits-for-nris/) cover the detail.

### Practical points from abroad

Make sure you can pay the card bill reliably from abroad. Auto-pay from your Indian account is the safest route.

Keep your Indian contact details current so you receive alerts. A missed bill on a secured card hurts your Indian file just as much as any other.

👉 **Tip:** Start an Indian secured card at least a year before any Indian home loan. A short clean history beats none.

## Your deposit is not your wealth plan

Here is a reflective point. A secured card uses a small deposit to build credit. It is not a savings or investment strategy.

Keep the deposit proportionate, and keep your bigger savings working elsewhere. Your investments never appear in your credit report.

### If you are a resident Indian

Global investments through GIFT City stay outside your credit report. Examples include the [DSP Global Equity Fund](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/dsp-global-equity-fund/) and the [Edelweiss Greater China Equity Fund](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/edelweiss-greater-china-equity-fund/).

Explore more on our [GIFT City mutual funds tool](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/). Applying for a [GIFT City IPO](https://getbelong.com/blog/ipo/gift-city-ipo/) or trading [futures and options](https://getbelong.com/products/futures-and-options/) does not affect your credit score.

### If you are an NRI

Your India-focused investments also stay outside your report. Examples include the [Tata India Dynamic Equity Fund](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/tata-india-dynamic-equity-fund/) and the [Sundaram India Mid Cap Fund](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/sundaram-india-mid-cap-fund-gift/).

So do [USD fixed deposits](https://getbelong.com/products/usd-fixed-deposits/), unless you borrow against them.

### Where we come in

[Belong](https://getbelong.com/) brings GIFT City [mutual funds](https://getbelong.com/products/mutual-funds/), [alternative investment funds](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-alternative-investment-funds/) and [IPOs](https://getbelong.com/products/ipo/) into one app. You can review our regulatory [licences](https://getbelong.com/licenses/) first.

## Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

### Does a credit card against FD improve my CIBIL score?

Yes, if it is reported to bureaus and you pay on time. [HDFC Bank notes](https://www.hdfc.bank.in/credit-cards/credit-card-against-fd) that timely repayment helps build a credit history and score.

### Can a secured credit card hurt my CIBIL score?

Yes. Late payments and high utilisation are reported like any other card. The deposit protects the bank, not your score.

### What happens to my FD if I miss a payment?

The bank may recover dues from your FD, as [IndusInd Bank explains](https://www.indusind.bank.in/iblogs/fixed-deposit/credit-cards-against-fixed-deposit-guide/). The missed payment can still be reported.

### Does my FD earn interest while it secures the card?

Yes. [Kotak Mahindra Bank notes](https://www.kotak.bank.in/en/stories-in-focus/cards/credit-cards/credit-card-against-fd.html) that the lien-marked FD continues to earn interest.

### Can I withdraw my FD while the secured card is active?

Generally not freely, because the FD is under lien. Close the card and clear dues first, then ask the bank to release the lien.

## What to do next

If you are a resident Indian with no credit history, open a secured card against a modest FD. Set auto-pay in full and keep balances low.

If you are an NRI planning a return, ask your bank about a secured card against your NRI deposit. Start at least a year ahead.
