GIFT Nifty Weekly Outlook: What Could Move Markets This Week [Oct 26-30, 2026]

featured-1792984937646-1792984939731.png

Nifty fell in all four sessions last week. Brent crude closed at its highest level since April. This week, a Fed decision, US inflation data and India's monthly expiry all arrive within five days.

Note: Earlier weeks analysis can be found here.

The big theme for GIFT Nifty this week is simple. Oil and interest rates are both pressing on Indian equities at the same time.

Wednesday night is likely the most important stretch. The Fed decision and results from Microsoft and Alphabet land after NSE has closed. GIFT Nifty will price them first, so keep the live GIFT Nifty tracker open on Thursday morning.

If you are working in Dubai and investing in India, this week matters for your rupee conversions too. If your portfolio is entirely in India, watch how much global cues drive your returns.

6 Things That Could Move GIFT Nifty This Week

1. The Fed Decision and Kevin Warsh's Tone

What's happening

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), the Fed's rate-setting body, meets on October 27 and 28. The decision comes at 11:30 PM IST on Wednesday. The target range is 3.75% to 4.00% after the September hike.

Futures markets price a high chance of a hold, with a December hike widely expected. This meeting carries no fresh economic projections.

Why GIFT Nifty investors should care

The US 10-year Treasury yield is sitting just under 5%. When US government bonds pay that much, emerging market stocks look less attractive to foreign funds.

A firmer interest rate outlook also tends to lift the dollar. That combination has driven foreign selling in India for most of this year. Our guide on how US stock market movements affect Indian markets explains the chain.

What to watch

Watch whether the Chair signals that December is close to locked in. Watch whether the 10-year yield moves decisively above 5% afterwards.

2. US GDP and PCE Inflation on Thursday Evening

What's happening

The US releases third-quarter GDP and September PCE inflation at 6:00 PM IST on Thursday. PCE is the Fed's preferred measure of inflation. Consensus for GDP growth is around 3.2%, up from 2.2% in the prior quarter.

Why GIFT Nifty investors should care

This data arrives after the Fed decision. So it will shape expectations for December more than this week's call.

If growth is strong and core inflation runs hot, yields and the dollar could rise. That may add pressure on risk assets, including Indian equities. A softer reading could ease some of that pressure.

What to watch

Focus on core PCE, which excludes food and energy. Compare its monthly change with the previous month's reading.

3. Crude Oil and the Saudi Supply Scare

What's happening

Brent settled at $116.72 on Friday. That was its highest close since late April and a gain of about 6% for the week. Houthi attacks on Saudi energy sites and airports drove the move.

Here is what most coverage misses. Independent reports so far show no confirmed loss of Saudi output or exports. Much of the price is a risk premium, which can unwind quickly if attacks stop.

Why GIFT Nifty investors should care

India is a large oil importer. Higher crude raises the import bill, weighs on the rupee and feeds inflation. Paints, aviation and oil marketing companies usually feel it first.

What to watch

Track whether Brent revisits last week's high or slips back toward the levels seen before the strikes. Indian Oil's results on Friday will show how a high-crude quarter hit refiners.

4. The Rupee and Foreign Selling

What's happening

The rupee ended Friday near 94.93 per dollar on a provisional basis. It had touched a six-week high midweek, helped by Jio IPO-linked inflows and RBI intervention.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have pulled out about Rs 48,056 crore from Indian equities in October so far. Their 2026 outflows are now close to double the full-year 2025 figure.

Why GIFT Nifty investors should care

A weaker rupee cuts the dollar value of a foreign investor's Indian holdings. That can trigger more selling, even when local earnings hold up. Read more on GIFT Nifty and the rupee and what GIFT Nifty tells you about FII sentiment.

If you are an NRI earning in dirhams or dollars, the rupee level also changes your remittance maths. Our piece on currency risk for NRIs covers how to think about it.

What to watch

Watch daily provisional FPI figures and whether USD/INR holds below 95.

5. Q2 Earnings, Tuesday's Expiry and the Jio Listing

What's happening

Around 250 companies report results this week, just before Diwali. Big names include Maruti Suzuki, HUL, L&T, Bajaj Auto, Asian Paints, Tata Steel and Sun Pharma. Infosys trimmed its revenue forecast for the year last week.

Tuesday is the monthly expiry for Nifty, Bank Nifty and stock F&O contracts. Expiry is the day open derivative positions settle or roll into next month.

Jio Platforms lists on Wednesday after a Rs 30,213 crore fresh issue. The issue was subscribed more than 20 times.

Why GIFT Nifty investors should care

Earnings tell you whether high input costs are squeezing margins.

Expiry days can produce sharp intraday moves that say little about the trend. A large listing can briefly pull money away from other stocks.

You can learn how futures and options work and read about GIFT Nifty futures. For new listings, see how an IPO works and our IPO investing page. IPOs in GIFT City follow their own process, covered in our GIFT City IPO guide.

What to watch

Watch margin commentary in consumer and auto results. Our note on how we think about stock selection applies here. Judge Jio's listing day by broader market breadth, not just its own price.

6. Big Tech Results and Other Central Banks

What's happening

Microsoft and Alphabet report after the US close on Wednesday. Amazon follows on Thursday.

The ECB decides on Thursday and the Bank of Japan on Friday. Both are widely expected to hold rates.

Why GIFT Nifty investors should care

Big Tech results move the Nasdaq, and that mood carries into Asian trading the next morning. A Bank of Japan surprise can move the yen and unsettle global liquidity.

What to watch

Watch US index futures early on Thursday and Friday. Our explainer on how global markets affect Nifty and Sensex shows how these cues travel.

Three Possible Scenarios for the Week

These are scenarios, not predictions. Each depends on how several events combine.

Positive-Risk Scenario

The Fed holds and sounds less certain about December. Core PCE comes in soft. Brent eases as Saudi attacks fade, and the rupee firms.

In that mix, yields and the dollar could cool. Foreign selling might slow, which may support a recovery in Indian equities. Strong margins from heavyweight results would add to that support.

Neutral Scenario

The Fed holds and repeats its tightening bias, as markets expect. Data lands close to consensus and oil stays elevated but stable.

Markets could then move within a range. Stock-specific moves from earnings would matter more than the index.

Risk-Off Scenario

The Fed signals more hikes ahead and core inflation surprises higher. The 10-year yield pushes above 5%, or a strike causes real supply loss.

GIFT Nifty may then react overnight, before the Indian cash market opens. A sharp gap could follow. With US midterms on November 3, political headlines around oil may also add noise.

The Days GIFT Nifty Watchers Should Pay Extra Attention

Wednesday night to Thursday morning.

The Fed decision comes at 11:30 PM IST. Microsoft and Alphabet results follow in the early hours.

NSE is closed for all of it, so GIFT Nifty moves first. Check the current GIFT Nifty level before 9 AM on Thursday.

Thursday evening, 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM IST.

US GDP, PCE and the ECB decision land within an hour. GIFT Nifty trades well into the Indian night, as our guide to GIFT Nifty trading hours explains.

Friday morning.

The Bank of Japan usually announces around midday Tokyo time, before NSE opens. Amazon's results will also be fresh.

This is why GIFT Nifty works as an early indicator.

It absorbs news while the Indian cash market sleeps.

Your 30-Second GIFT Nifty Morning Check

  1. Check the current GIFT Nifty level.

  2. Compare it with the previous Nifty close.

  3. Calculate the indicative gap.

  4. Check how US and Asian markets moved.

  5. Check whether a scheduled event happened overnight.

Indicative Gap % = (GIFT Nifty - Previous Nifty Close) / Previous Nifty Close x 100

Using Monday's numbers: (22,608 - 22,600) / 22,600 x 100 is about +0.04%. That signals a flat open.

This is only an indication, not a guarantee of the opening level. GIFT Nifty is a futures contract, so it can trade at a small premium or discount to Nifty.

For context, see the GIFT Nifty chart explained, GIFT Nifty historical data and GIFT Nifty live weekly pages.

A pattern we see often: an investor checks GIFT Nifty at 7 AM, sees red, and pauses a SIP. One day's signal rarely justifies changing a long-term plan. We covered this in should NRIs pause their SIP when GIFT Nifty points lower.

Ended at 94.93 after a six-week high midweek

Two narratives dominated. First, the Saudi supply scare pushed crude to six-month highs and hit oil-sensitive stocks.

Second, the damage ran deeper outside large caps. On Friday alone, the Nifty Midcap 100 fell 2.21% and the Smallcap 100 dropped 2.94%. Indian benchmarks fell in all four sessions of the truncated week.

What This Means for NRIs and Resident Indians

Your response to a week like this depends on where you sit.

If you are an NRI: A volatile week is not a reason to change long-term India allocations. If you plan to send money home, watch the rupee level rather than the index.

Compare deposit options in our GIFT City FD vs FCNR vs NRO and NRE FDs guide. You can also check the NRI FD rates tool. USD fixed deposits are another route to keep savings in dollars.

When global rates stay high, borrowing costs rarely fall quickly. If an NRI home loan is on your list, keep your CIBIL score in good shape.

If you are a resident Indian: This week shows how much of your portfolio rides on oil and US rates. If your money is entirely in Indian stocks, read about how to invest in the USA from India. You can compare dollar funds on the GIFT City mutual funds tool and our mutual funds page.

Funds listed there include the DSP Global Equity Fund and the Edelweiss Greater China Equity Fund. India-focused options include the Tata India Dynamic Equity Fund and the Sundaram India Mid Cap Fund.

These are examples to compare, not recommendations. Eligibility depends on your residential status.

Larger investors can review GIFT City alternative investment funds. A weaker rupee also raises the cost of spending abroad, so compare forex charges on credit cards in India.

Decision clarity:

  • If your goal is long-term wealth, keep your SIPs running and ignore single-day gaps.

  • If your timeline is short, avoid adding equity risk in a week packed with overnight events.

  • If you book gains or losses during this volatility, keep records ready for tax filing.

Ignoring currency exposure has a cost. A rupee that keeps sliding quietly erodes the real value of rupee-only savings.

Bottom Line

The Fed decision on Wednesday night is the biggest event of the week. Markets expect a hold, so the Chair's tone on December matters more than the decision.

Crude oil is the biggest external risk. Brent sits near six-month highs on a risk premium that could rise or unwind quickly.

The US 10-year yield is the indicator to watch. A clear move above 5% would likely keep pressure on foreign flows into India.

Thursday is the most important day. The morning carries the overnight Fed and Big Tech reaction. The evening brings US data and the ECB.

Check the GIFT Nifty Live tracker during the week for the latest level and indicative opening signal.

FAQs

What is the GIFT Nifty outlook this week?

GIFT Nifty this week will likely track the Fed decision, US PCE inflation, crude oil and Q2 results. It started Monday close to Friday's Nifty close, signalling a flat open.

What events could move GIFT Nifty this week?

The key events are Tuesday's monthly expiry and Wednesday's Jio listing. Add the Fed decision on Wednesday night and US GDP and PCE on Thursday evening. The ECB and Bank of Japan decisions follow.

Why does GIFT Nifty move at night?

GIFT Nifty trades on NSE International Exchange for many more hours than NSE. It reacts to US data and Fed decisions that arrive after Indian markets close.

Does GIFT Nifty predict the Nifty opening?

It gives an indication, not a guarantee. The gap between GIFT Nifty and the previous Nifty close often shrinks or widens by 9:15 AM. Read our GIFT Nifty vs Nifty 50 comparison for the differences.

How does crude oil affect Nifty?

India imports much of its oil. Higher crude can weaken the rupee, raise inflation and squeeze margins in oil-sensitive sectors. That often weighs on Nifty.
