Picture two NRIs in the same building in Sharjah. Both open GIFT Nifty accounts in the same month, quoted almost identical brokerage.
One has an uneventful year. The other spends it discovering things that were never on the website.
His funding source was not accepted, so the first wire came back. His conversion rate was set by the broker rather than a published reference.
His margin was squared off during a session he was asleep for. None of that showed up in the rate he compared.
At Belong, this is why we push people past the rate card. The twelve checks below are what actually separates those two years.
First, is the firm real and permitted
Three checks before anything else. Skip them and the rest does not matter.
1. Is it a registered NSE IX trading member?
Not every firm advertising GIFT City access is a member of the exchange. Verify the name on the NSE International Exchange site itself.
A broker's own page is marketing. The exchange list is the record.
2. What does its IFSCA registration actually permit?
Entities in GIFT City hold specific registrations for specific activities. A licence to do one thing is not a licence to do everything.
Ask which registration the firm holds with the International Financial Services Centres Authority and for what.
3. Does it serve your country of residence?
Reporting obligations lead some firms to decline investors in certain countries. US and Canada based NRIs meet this most often.
Ask before you gather documents, not after. An excellent broker who cannot onboard you is not a candidate.
👉 Tip: If a firm resists any of these three questions, you have your answer. Our note on red flags in NRI investment products covers the wider pattern.
Then, where your money actually sits
4. Trading member or clearing member?
Many trading members clear through another firm. That adds a link between you and the clearing corporation, and most clients never learn the name.
Ask which clearing member handles your trades. Then look that firm up too.
5. Are client funds segregated, and where?
Your money sits with the broker and its clearing bank, not inside the clearing corporation. Segregation is what protects you if a firm fails.
Ask which clearing bank holds the settlement account. A firm that cannot answer quickly is telling you something.
6. Which funding sources are accepted, and how fast can you leave?
Permitted funding routes genuinely differ between providers. Get the accepted list in writing before you send anything.
Ask for realistic withdrawal timelines in the same message. The answer matters more than any feature on the platform.
Now, what it really costs
7. The complete fee schedule, not the headline
Ask whether brokerage is quoted per side or per round turn. Ask about monthly minimums and volume tiers.
Then ask about account maintenance, platform access and inactivity charges. These are where an occasional trader's costs actually live.
Our pieces on NRI account hidden charges and NRI banking hidden fees show how this works elsewhere.
8. How is currency converted, and when?
This one decides more of your outcome than brokerage does. Ask whether conversion happens at a published reference rate or the firm's own rate.
Then ask what time of day it runs. A firm offering unusually low brokerage often recovers it here.
The same logic applies across products, as why NRIs should not pick only the highest GIFT City rate explains.
9. Margin policy, shortfall penalties and square-off rules
Margin requirements come from the exchange, but broker policy sits on top of them.
Ask what happens when you fall short. Ask specifically when the firm squares off a position, and whether you are called first.
The collateral you post is not a cap on your loss. Knowing the square-off trigger is how you avoid finding that out expensively.
👉 Tip: Ask for the square-off policy in writing before funding. Reading it during a margin call is too late.
Finally, does it fit your life
10. Does the platform work across both sessions?
This contract trades across Asian, European and US hours. Some platforms are noticeably better in one session than another.
Check order types too. A stop order you cannot place is a risk policy you cannot follow.
Comparisons of what is available sit in best investment platforms for NRIs and best trading platforms in the UAE.
11. Is support available in your waking hours?
An Indian trading afternoon is a European morning and a North American night. Support hours matter more here than for a domestic account.
Ask when a human is reachable and by what channel. Then test it before you fund.
12. What reporting do you get, and how do you escalate?
You need contract notes and statements you can actually reconcile. Ask what is provided and in what format.
Ask about the grievance process and where it escalates. Knowing the route before you need it is the point.
The ones people skip
Checks eight and nine get skipped the most. They are also the two that quietly decide whether a year goes well.
Selling pressure has its own tells. We collect them in warning signs an NRI investment product may be mis-sold.
A word on firm stability
You are trusting an institution, not a platform. Solvency of the firm and its clearing member is part of your risk.
Size and track record are imperfect signals, but they are signals. A newer firm is not disqualified, though it deserves more questions.
The method we use for judging fund houses transfers reasonably well. See how to choose a mutual fund AMC you can trust.
How this compares with going offshore
Some NRIs weigh a GIFT City broker against a foreign brokerage account. The trade-off is regulation and reporting, not just cost.
We set the comparison out in GIFT City versus a US brokerage and GIFT City funds versus overseas platforms.
Neither route is automatically better. The right answer depends on where you live and what you already hold.
Decision clarity
If you cannot verify membership on the exchange site, stop there.
If the firm will not put fees and conversion method in writing, keep looking.
If support cannot reach you in your own time zone, expect that to matter eventually.
If you are comparing on brokerage alone, you are comparing the smallest number on the page.
If you live in India
Resident access to this contract is contested and broker-specific, and the checks above do not change that.
Indian investors should confirm what their account permits before applying. For global investing from India, funds are usually the more sensible route than futures.
Where to go from here

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I verify a GIFT Nifty broker is genuine?
Check the firm's name on the NSE International Exchange member list rather than its own website. Also ask which IFSCA registration it holds and for what activity.
Does my broker hold my money?
Your funds sit with the broker and its clearing bank, not inside the clearing corporation. Ask whether client funds are segregated and which clearing bank is used.
What is the most overlooked check?
How currency is converted. It is rarely a stated fee and it applies twice, on funding and withdrawal. It can outweigh any brokerage difference between two firms.
Can any NRI open an account?
Not always. Some firms decline investors in certain countries for reporting reasons. Confirm your country is served before gathering documents.
Is the cheapest broker the best choice?
Rarely. Low brokerage is often recovered through conversion rates or account charges. Compare the full schedule and the conversion method together.
