GIFT City has become a name worth borrowing. That is the problem.

As the jurisdiction has grown, so has the number of operators who mention it in their pitch.

Some are fully regulated. Some are regulated for something else entirely. A few are not regulated at all.

An investor in Abu Dhabi put it well to us. "Everyone says GIFT City. Nobody says which licence."

This guide is deliberately platform agnostic. Run it on us at [Belong](https://getbelong.com/), and run it on every alternative you are considering.

Each gate is pass or fail. A single failure should stop you.

## The trap almost nobody sees

Start here, because this misunderstanding causes the largest losses.

Having an office in GIFT City is not the same as being regulated by IFSCA. The zone contains ordinary companies alongside regulated financial entities.

An address is a lease. A licence is a permission. They are granted by different bodies for different purposes.

Investigators in India have examined schemes promoted from GIFT City addresses. Those operators were never authorised to offer financial products. Investors saw the location and assumed the oversight.

👉 Tip: "Based in GIFT City" is marketing. "Registered with IFSCA under \[named regulation\]" is a claim you can verify.

Our explainer on [GIFT City myths](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-city-myths/) separates the two further.

## Gate 1: Can you name the legal entity

Ask a simple question. Which company holds the licence?

A brand name is not an answer. Neither is a group name or an app name.

You want a registered company name, ideally with its registration number. Legitimate platforms publish this in the website footer without being asked.

If the answer is evasive, stop. Nothing further needs checking.

## Gate 2: Is that entity in the IFSCA directory

IFSCA publishes a public directory of every entity it has registered, authorised or licensed. Its own homepage carries a standing warning to deal only with listed entities.

Search the legal entity name, not the brand. Names are often similar but not identical.

Check three things on the entry. The name must match exactly, the registration must be current, and the category must exist.

Impersonation is a known pattern across Indian financial markets. Regulators have warned that fraudsters build convincing sites, reuse real registration numbers and forge certificates.

This is why you search the regulator's database rather than reading the platform's own certificate image. A screenshot proves nothing.

If you find nothing in the directory, the conversation is over.

## Gate 3: Does the licence match the product

This is the gate most people skip, and it is where partial legitimacy hides.

GIFT City has distinct categories of regulated entity. Each permits different activity.

Entity type

What it can do

What it cannot do

IFSC Banking Unit

Take deposits, run foreign currency accounts

Manage a fund on your behalf

Fund Management Entity

Launch and manage schemes

Act as your bank

Broker Dealer

Execute trades on a recognised IFSC exchange

Manufacture a fund

Distributor

Offer and distribute capital market products

Manage your portfolio

Payment Service Provider

Move money, issue accounts and e-money

Take deposits as a bank

Investment Adviser

Give advice for a fee

Guarantee outcomes

A platform holding a payments authorisation is not thereby licensed to manage your investments. A distributor is not the fund manager.

Match the licence to the specific product you are being sold. Not to the brand, and not to the general impression.

👉 Tip: Ask directly. "Which of your licences covers this specific product?" A legitimate firm answers immediately.

## Gate 4: Where does your money actually land

Follow the money to its resting place. This matters more than any certificate.

For a deposit, the money should sit with a bank in your own name. For a fund, units should sit with an independent custodian.

The warning sign is pooling. If your money enters the platform's own account and stays there, you are lending to the platform rather than investing.

Ask for the name of the underlying bank, fund and custodian. Then verify those separately, because they carry their own registrations.

Our comparison of [GIFT City funds versus overseas platforms](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-city-funds-vs-overseas-platforms/) covers how these structures differ.

## Gate 5: Do the economics make sense

Fraud usually announces itself through arithmetic long before it fails.

Fixed high monthly returns on a market linked product are not possible. Schemes that pay early investors regularly to build confidence are a recognised pattern.

Compare any headline number to what regulated deposits and funds in the same currency actually offer. A wide gap is not an opportunity, it is a warning.

Read the return claim carefully. See our note on [post tax returns versus headline returns](https://getbelong.com/blog/post-tax-returns-matter-more-than-headline-returns/). We also explain [why the highest GIFT City rate is the wrong filter](https://getbelong.com/blog/why-nris-should-not-pick-only-the-highest-gift-city-rate/).

The [high return investment mistake](https://getbelong.com/blog/high-return-investment-mistake/) is the most expensive one in this whole category.

Capital rules matter here too. Regulated intermediaries must maintain a minimum [net worth](https://getbelong.com/blog/net-worth-meaning/), which supports their [solvency](https://getbelong.com/blog/solvency-meaning/). Unregulated operators have no such floor.

## Gate 6: Can you get out, and can you complain

Two exits matter. Money and grievance.

Ask how redemption works and how long settlement takes. Vague answers about [liquidity](https://getbelong.com/blog/liquidity-meaning/) are a genuine red flag. Our note on [exiting GIFT City investments](https://getbelong.com/blog/can-i-exit-gift-city-investments-anytime/) sets out realistic expectations.

Then find the grievance policy. IFSCA requires regulated entities to run a complaint handling and grievance redressal mechanism with named officers.

Unresolved complaints escalate to IFSCA itself. We have mapped that route in [IFSCA complaints and grievance redressal](https://getbelong.com/blog/ifsca-complaint-and-grievance/).

An operator outside the regulatory perimeter offers neither. That is the real cost of skipping verification.

## What IFSCA can actually do

Worth knowing before you need it.

IFSCA can inspect and investigate. It can issue advisories and warning letters, impose penalties, and in serious cases cancel a registration.

It has issued interim orders freezing disputed investor funds while investigating. It also directed regulated entities in April 2025 to hold valid registrations and approvals at all times.

None of this helps you if the operator was never regulated. Enforcement reaches inside the perimeter, not outside it.

## The residual red flags

Some signals apply regardless of paperwork.

- Pressure to decide before a deadline that keeps shifting

- Returns described as guaranteed, assured or fixed on market products

- Payment requested to an individual account or a third party

- Advice offered without any question about your residency status

- Testimonials, screenshots and group chats offered instead of registration details

- Reluctance to put the product terms in writing

Our fuller lists sit in [red flags in NRI investment products](https://getbelong.com/blog/red-flags-in-nri-investment-products/) and [warning signs a product may be mis-sold](https://getbelong.com/blog/warning-signs-an-nri-investment-product-may-be-mis-sold/).

Two behavioural traps deserve naming. [Copying other NRIs' investments](https://getbelong.com/blog/why-copying-other-nris-investments-is-dangerous/) transfers their risk to you. And [first time investor mistakes](https://getbelong.com/blog/first-time-nri-investors-mistakes/) cluster around trusting a referral instead of a register.

## If you are an NRI

Your verification order should be entity, licence, custody, then product.

Confirm the platform in the IFSCA directory before you upload a single document. KYC data given to an unregulated operator cannot be recalled.

Also check that the product suits your residency. Legitimate is not the same as suitable, which we cover in [when GIFT City may not be right for you](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-city-investments-may-not-be-right-for-you/).

Compare regulated deposit options using our [NRI FD rates explorer](https://getbelong.com/tools/nri-fd-rates/).

## If you are a resident Indian

GIFT City deposits are not open to you, so any platform offering one is misdescribing the product.

Your legitimate route is outbound investing under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme. Verify the remittance path alongside the platform.

Explore [GIFT City mutual funds](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/) and [alternative investment funds](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-alternative-investment-funds/) for the regulated universe. ## FAQ

**Is every company in GIFT City regulated by IFSCA?**

No. GIFT City hosts ordinary businesses as well as regulated financial entities. An address there implies nothing about financial licensing.

**How do I check a platform's licence?**

Search the legal entity name on the IFSCA public directory. Confirm the name, the current status and the registration category.

**A platform showed me a certificate. Is that enough?**

No. Certificates can be forged or reused. Always verify the registration on the regulator's own database instead.

**What if the platform is registered but for a different activity?**

Treat that as a fail for the product in question. A payments or distribution licence does not authorise fund management.

**What can I do if I have already invested with an unregulated operator?**

Report it to the relevant authorities and seek legal advice promptly. Regulatory grievance routes generally cover regulated entities only.
