Nifty rose 2% this week. The Nasdaq fell about 2%.
That gap is the real story of the week. On paper, the setup looked hostile for Indian equities. Brent stayed near six-month highs, the Fed kept its tightening bias and US tech sold off hard.
Indian markets still recovered almost all of the previous week's loss. This review explains how, and why the headline number hides a weaker picture underneath.

The Week in One Table
US weekly changes are calculated from the Oct 23 and Oct 30 closes. India VIX measures expected volatility in Nifty over the next 30 days.
A falling VIX means traders were pricing in calmer markets.
How the Week Unfolded, Day by Day
Notice the shape. Three quiet sessions, then two strong ones after the Fed decision.
5 Things That Actually Moved Nifty This Week
1. The Fed Held, but With Two Dissents for a Hike
The Fed held its target range at 3.75% to 4.00% on Wednesday night. The vote was 10-2. Two members, Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack, wanted a 25 basis point hike.
Kevin Warsh gave no promise on December. He said "monetary medicine is starting to work." Futures still priced roughly an 85% chance of a December hike.
Indian markets read this as "no new shock." Thursday was the best session of the week. Higher interest rate risk had already been priced in after September's hike.
2. US Data Beat on Growth, Matched on Inflation
US third-quarter GDP grew at 3.4%, above the 3.1% to 3.2% consensus range. September core PCE rose 0.3% for the month and 3.1% over the year. That was in line with expectations.
Core PCE is the Fed's preferred inflation gauge. It excludes food and energy.
In-line inflation removed one tail risk. Strong growth kept December hike odds high, but did not push them sharply higher.
3. US Tech Sold Off, and Indian IT Rallied Anyway
This was the most interesting move of the week. Alphabet fell over 11% before the US open on Thursday, despite revenue growth of 25%. Investors worried about heavy AI infrastructure spending.
Amazon then missed expectations, and Intel fell about 29% on Friday. The Nasdaq dropped 2.84% that day alone.
Indian IT went the other way. Nifty IT rose about 2.3% on Friday, with Infosys up 3.4%, Wipro and Coforge each up over 4%. Market reports linked it to rotation away from global tech and to Cognizant's results.
What most coverage misses: Indian IT services firms do not spend on AI capex the way Alphabet does. When markets punish spenders, service providers can look relatively safer.
That logic held this week. It may not hold every week.
4. Pharma Was the Quiet Winner
Nifty Pharma gained about 7.1% over the week, the best sector by a wide margin. Healthcare rose about 6.9%.
The gains were results-driven and concentrated. Laurus Labs rose 7.2% on Friday after its profit more than doubled. Zydus Lifesciences gained 5.2% and Apollo Hospitals about 3%.
5. Jio Platforms Listed Strongly
Jio Platforms opened at ₹1,358 on Wednesday, a 21.36% premium to its ₹1,119 issue price. It closed at ₹1,419, up another 4.49%.
That valued the company at about ₹13.05 lakh crore. Reports described it as India's second most valuable listed company after Reliance.
The listing did not lift the wider market that day. Nifty still fell 0.22% as IT and oil stocks weighed.
A strong debut and a weak market can happen together. Our explainer on how an IPO works covers why listing day prices move the way they do.
What Did Not Change
Crude oil stayed high. Brent traded in a band of roughly $113 to $116 a barrel through the week. Houthi attacks on Saudi energy sites continued.
The rupee weakened to about 95.25 per dollar. Foreign selling also has not reversed. Daily data shows FPIs were net buyers on Tuesday and Wednesday, but net sellers on Monday and Thursday.
Monday to Thursday, FPIs were net buyers of about ₹2,706 crore. For October through the 29th, they remain net sellers of about ₹48,760 crore. Domestic institutions bought about ₹63,038 crore in the same period.

The Weakness Under the Headline
Friday's Nifty gain hid a poor day for most stocks. On the NSE, 2,862 stocks fell and only 1,311 rose. The Nifty Smallcap index lost 1.8%.
So the index rose because a few large IT and pharma names carried it. Market breadth tells you how many stocks are participating. Narrow rallies tend to be more fragile than broad ones.
Earlier in the week, breadth was healthier. Smallcaps jumped 2.69% on Tuesday, and Thursday's rally was broad.
Scorecard: How Our Monday Outlook Held Up
In Monday's GIFT Nifty Weekly Outlook, we set out what could move markets. Here is an honest check.
The week landed closest to our neutral scenario for the index. It was a risk-off week for US tech. India mostly avoided that spillover.
The lesson: global cues travel by sector, not just by index. A Nasdaq sell-off does not always mean a weak Nifty open. Our guide on how US stock market movements affect Indian markets explains this in more depth.
What This Means for NRIs and Resident Indians
A quiet thought before the action points. Anyone who sold after last week's 2.4% fall missed this week's recovery. That is the usual cost of reacting to one week.
If you are an NRI: The rupee and the index can move in different directions. Nifty rose while the rupee weakened.
In dirham or dollar terms, your India gains this week were smaller than the headline. Our piece on currency risk for NRIs explains why.
For returns not tied to the rupee, compare GIFT City FD vs FCNR vs NRO and NRE FDs. Our NRI FD rates tool and USD fixed deposits page are good starting points.
With the Fed still leaning towards a hike, borrowing costs are unlikely to ease quickly. If an NRI home loan is on your plan, protect your CIBIL score now.
If you are a resident Indian: This week showed that diversification works in both directions. A portfolio fully in Indian stocks rose 2%.
One in US tech fell. Holding both would have smoothed the week.
If your portfolio is entirely in India, read how to invest in the USA from India. Our note on the risks of investing only in Indian markets sets out the case for global investing from India.
The GIFT City mutual funds tool lets you compare dollar funds. Examples include the DSP Global Equity Fund and the Edelweiss Greater China Equity Fund.
India-focused options include the Tata India Dynamic Equity Fund and the Sundaram India Mid Cap Fund. These are examples to compare, not recommendations. Eligibility depends on residential status.

Decision clarity:
If your goal is long-term wealth, ignore weekly swings and keep SIPs running.
If you were tempted to sell last week, use this week as evidence against timing exits.
If your timeline is under a year, avoid adding equity risk while crude stays near six-month highs.
If you booked gains on Jio's listing, track the holding period for tax filing.
What happens if you ignore currency: A 2% Nifty gain is closer to 1.6% in dollar terms. Over years, that gap grows through compounding.
Common Mistakes We Saw This Week
Reading Nasdaq futures as a Nifty forecast.
US tech fell, and Indian IT rose.Chasing the Jio listing pop.
A strong debut says little about long-term returns. Read our stock selection guide instead.Trusting the headline index.
Friday's gain came with weak breadth.Treating one week of FPI buying as a turn.
October is still deeply negative.
What to Watch Next Week
Tuesday, Nov 3: Nifty weekly expiry and the US midterm elections on the same day.
Crude oil: Whether Brent breaks out of its $113 to $116 range.
December Fed odds: Any move away from the roughly 85% hike pricing.
FPI flows: Whether this week's mixed buying continues into November.
The US election results will arrive while NSE is closed. GIFT Nifty will react first. Check the GIFT Nifty Live tracker before the open on Wednesday.

Bottom Line
Nifty gained 2% in a week when US tech fell sharply. The Fed delivered no surprise and US inflation matched forecasts. Indian IT gained as investors rotated away from global AI spenders.
The risks have not gone away. Crude is still high, the rupee is still weak and foreign investors are still net sellers for October.
Belong's view is simple. Treat this week as a recovery, not a turnaround.
FAQs
Why did Nifty rise this week?
Nifty rose 2% on a Fed decision with no surprise, in-line US inflation, and gains in IT and pharma. Thursday and Friday delivered most of the move.
Why did Indian IT stocks rise when US tech fell?
US tech fell on worries about heavy AI spending. Indian IT services firms are not big AI spenders, so investors rotated towards them. Cognizant's results also helped sentiment.
Did foreign investors return to Indian markets this week?
Partly. FPIs were net buyers on two days and net sellers on two days from Monday to Thursday. For October as a whole, they remain heavy net sellers.
How did the Jio Platforms listing go?
Jio Platforms listed at ₹1,358, a 21.36% premium to the issue price. It closed its first day at ₹1,419.
What should investors watch next week?
Watch the US midterm results on November 3, Brent crude and FPI flows. The US results arrive overnight, so GIFT Nifty will show the first reaction.
