Here is an uncomfortable truth about bond apps. The bond with the highest yield on the screen is rarely the best bond for you.

Online bond platforms have made corporate bonds as easy to buy as a fixed deposit. That is good news. But a bond is not an FD, and a higher number usually means higher risk.

At [Belong](https://getbelong.com/), we speak with NRIs and resident Indians every week who are moving money out of FDs into bonds.

This guide compares the best online bond platforms in India. It also shows how to judge the bonds they sell, which matters more than the app.

## The Rule That Separates Safe Platforms From Risky Ones

SEBI created a framework for Online Bond Platform Providers, or OBPPs, in November 2022. These platforms must register with a stock exchange.

On 19 November 2025, SEBI issued a [caution against unregistered OBPPs](https://investor.sebi.gov.in/pdf/1763551749033.pdf). It said some fintechs and brokers were offering bond services without registering with the exchanges.

SEBI warned that such platforms lack regulatory oversight and offer no investor protection or grievance redressal. It asked investors to check registration on the SEBI, NSE or BSE websites before transacting.

SEBI's [OBPP page](https://www.sebi.gov.in/online-bond-platform-providers.html) links to the registered lists from both exchanges. That is your first stop before downloading any bond app.

**Tip:** Search the platform's legal company name on the NSE or BSE list. The app's brand name is often different from the registered entity.

We ranked these on regulation, transparency of bond details, NRI access and ease of use. We did not rank them on headline yields.

## The Platforms, Compared

### 1\. RBI Retail Direct

This is the RBI's own platform for individual investors. As per [RBI's Retail Direct FAQs](https://www.rbi.org.in/commonman/english/Scripts/FAQs.aspx?Id=3337), you can buy Treasury Bills, dated government securities and State Development Loans.

Opening and maintaining the account is free. Your securities sit in a Retail Direct Gilt account held with the RBI itself.

**For NRIs:** Non-resident retail investors can open an account if FEMA allows them to invest in government securities. You also need a rupee savings account in India and a PAN.

**How it compares:** The safest issuer in India, with no platform in between. It offers no corporate bonds and a plainer interface than private apps.

Our guide on [government bonds](https://getbelong.com/blog/mutual-funds/government-bonds/) explains what you are buying.

### 2\. IndiaBonds

IndiaBonds is registered as India Bond Private Limited on both exchange OBPP lists. These were compiled by [Cafemutual in September 2026](https://cafemutual.com/news/cafe-alt/38742-who-are-the-registered-obpps-currently).

**For NRIs:** Its [NRI page](https://www.indiabonds.com/nri/) offers an NRI-NRO bond account for NRIs, OCIs and PIOs. You need a PAN, an NRO bank account and a demat account. Payments go directly to the clearing corporation.

The page shows options from government securities to lower-rated corporate bonds. It does not mention NRE accounts.

**How it compares:** One of the clearer NRI journeys among private platforms. NRIs who want NRE funding should look at GoldenPi.

### 3\. GoldenPi

GoldenPi Securities appears on both exchange lists. Its [NRI FAQ](https://goldenpi.com/faq/invest-as-an-nri/can-an-nri-invest-in-indian-bonds-and-NCDs) states NRIs can invest through NRE or NRO accounts linked to an NRI demat.

It also notes that not every bond is open to non-residents. Each issuer's offer document decides that, and GoldenPi shows an NRI-eligible bonds collection.

**How it compares:** It addresses NRE funding more directly than IndiaBonds. Repatriation still depends on the account, as the FAQ explains.

### 4\. Wint Wealth

Wint Wealth operates through Wint Securities, formerly Fourdegreewater Services. Its [about page](https://www.wintwealth.com/about-us/) describes it as an online bond platform provider in the debt segment.

**Who it suits:** Retail investors who prefer a curated shortlist over a large catalogue.

**How it compares:** Simpler to browse than IndiaBonds. The about page does not mention NRI eligibility, so NRIs should confirm first.

### 5\. Grip Invest

Grip's [FAQ page](https://www.gripinvest.in/faq/grip-basics/general-questions) names Grip Broking Private Limited as a member of NSE. It lists corporate bonds, securitised debt instruments and fixed deposits.

Securitised debt instruments, or SDIs, are backed by pools of loans rather than one company. They carry different risks from regular bonds, so read the documents carefully.

The page also states Grip is only a distributor of fixed deposits.

**How it compares:** Broader product range than Wint Wealth. NRI eligibility is not stated on its FAQ page.

### 6\. Broker Apps With OBPP Registration

Several large brokers are registered OBPPs. The September 2026 lists show Groww, ICICI Securities and Angel One among them.

**Why it helps:** Bonds sit in the same demat as your shares and funds. One login, one statement.

**What to check:** Range and depth. Specialist platforms often list more bonds and show more detail.

### 7\. Zerodha Kite for Government Securities

Zerodha's [Kite guide](https://zerodha.com/z-connect/tradezerodha/kite/invest-in-government-bonds-and-sovereign-gold-bonds) explains how to bid for Treasury Bills, government securities and State Development Loans.

For new government securities, the RBI auction decides the yield. Allotment is not guaranteed if bids exceed the issue size.

**How it compares:** Convenient if you already use Kite. RBI Retail Direct offers the same securities directly.

**Tip:** For government securities, the platform matters less. The issuer is the same Government of India either way.

SEBI and the OBPP Association of India also launched Bond Central in February 2025, as [IndiaBonds reports](https://www.indiabonds.com/bonduni/news/what-is-bond-central/). It shows listed corporate bonds, prices and disclosures in one place. Use it to cross-check what any app shows you.

## Judge the Bond, Not the App

Every OBPP sells bonds issued by other companies. The platform does not guarantee repayment.

SEBI's [investor guide to corporate bonds](https://investor.sebi.gov.in/pdf/reference-material/corporatebonds.pdf) explains what to check. Here is a practical version.

- **Can the company pay?**

Look at interest coverage and debt-to-equity. A company with high [leverage](https://getbelong.com/blog/leverage-meaning/) has less room for mistakes.

- **Is the bond secured?**

Secured bonds are backed by assets. Unsecured bonds are not.

- **Where do you rank?**

SEBI's guide explains repayment order if a company winds up. Subordinated holders may recover only part of their money.

- **Can you exit early?**

SEBI notes Indian corporate bonds are less liquid than shares. Plan to hold until maturity.

- **What is the rating?**

A rating is an opinion, not a promise. Read the rationale, not just the letters.

If a company becomes unable to pay its debts, that is [insolvency](https://getbelong.com/blog/insolvency-meaning/). Bondholders then wait in line with other creditors.

## Why Yield Can Mislead You

A bond's price is the [present value](https://getbelong.com/blog/present-value-meaning/) of its future payments. When interest rates rise, existing bond prices fall.

So a bond can lose market value even if the company is healthy. This matters only if you sell before maturity.

A very high yield usually signals that the market sees more risk. Our guide on [high-return vs stable investments](https://getbelong.com/blog/high-return-investments-vs-stable-investments/) explains this trade-off.

## A Pattern We See With FD Investors

Say you are 52, retired early, and living in Pune. Your bank FD is maturing, and a bond app shows a much higher yield.

You move your entire FD into two corporate bonds with similar ratings. Both are unsecured, and both companies are in the same sector.

If that sector hits trouble, both bonds suffer together. You have swapped a guaranteed product for concentrated credit risk.

What happens if this is ignored? A single default can wipe out years of extra interest.

A steadier approach is to mix government securities, high-quality corporate bonds and deposits. Our guides on [corporate FDs vs bank FDs](https://getbelong.com/blog/corporate-fds-vs-bank-fds/) and [FD alternatives](https://getbelong.com/blog/fixed-deposit-aternatives/) help here.

If you want dollar-denominated safety instead, look at our [USD fixed deposits](https://getbelong.com/products/usd-fixed-deposits/). Our [NRI FD rates tool](https://getbelong.com/tools/nri-fd-rates/) compares deposit rates across banks.

## Direct Bonds or Bond Funds?

Buying individual bonds gives you control and a known maturity. Bond funds give you diversification and professional credit checks.

If you want

Consider

Watch out for

Certainty of maturity date

Individual bonds or G-Secs

Concentration in one issuer

Diversification with small amounts

Corporate bond funds

Fund expenses and NAV movement

Lowest credit risk

G-Secs via RBI Retail Direct

Interest rate risk on early exit

Regular income

High-quality bonds held to maturity

Chasing the highest coupon

You can also explore debt funds through our [mutual funds product](https://getbelong.com/products/mutual-funds/).

## How Bond Income Is Taxed

Bond returns come in two forms. Interest, and capital gains if you sell above your purchase price.

These are taxed differently. Our guide on [capital gains vs interest income](https://getbelong.com/blog/capital-gains-vs-interest-income/) explains the difference.

**For NRIs:** Interest paid to NRIs usually attracts TDS. Our guide on [TDS for NRIs](https://getbelong.com/blog/tds-for-nri-section-195-rules-rates-compliance/) covers the rules.

Tax rates change with budgets, so confirm on the [Income Tax portal](https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/ais-faq). Bond interest also appears in your AIS, so check it before filing. Our [tax filing service](https://getbelong.com/services/tax-filing/) can help.

## For NRIs: What to Check Before You Invest

If you are working in Dubai and want Indian bond income, three things matter.

**Account type.**

NRE money is fully repatriable. NRO repatriation has annual limits, as GoldenPi's FAQ notes.

**Bond eligibility.**

Not every bond is open to NRIs. The issuer's offer document decides.

**Platform support.**

Some platforms support NRO only. Others do not state NRI support at all.

Our guide on [building a low-risk NRI portfolio](https://getbelong.com/blog/build-a-low-risk-nri-portfolio/) shows where bonds fit. You can also read our comparison of [government stocks for NRIs](https://getbelong.com/blog/best-government-stocks-nris/).

## Where GIFT City Fits

There is one regulatory development worth knowing.

In May 2026, SEBI issued a [consultation paper on OBPPs](https://www.sebi.gov.in/sebi_data/attachdocs/may-2026/1777961305138.pdf). It proposes letting OBPPs offer products regulated by IFSCA in GIFT City, within FEMA and LRS rules. This is a proposal, not a final rule.

For now, GIFT City already offers USD-denominated options. Our guide to [GIFT City bonds](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-city-bonds/) explains them.

**If you are an NRI**, GIFT City lets you hold USD investments connected to India. Compare deposits in our guide on [GIFT City FD vs FCNR vs NRO and NRE FDs](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-city-fd-vs-fcnr-vs-nro-and-nre-fds/). For broader options, see our guide to [AIFs, REITs and bonds for NRIs](https://getbelong.com/blog/aifs-reits-and-bonds-advanced-investment-options-for-nris/).

**If you are a resident Indian**, your bond portfolio is fully in rupees. USD assets can balance that. Our guide on how to [invest in the USA from India](https://getbelong.com/blog/invest-in-usa-from-india/) explains the routes.

You can browse USD funds on our [GIFT City mutual funds tool](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/). Funds often reviewed include the [DSP Global Equity Fund](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/dsp-global-equity-fund/) and the [Edelweiss Greater China Equity Fund](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/edelweiss-greater-china-equity-fund/).

NRIs wanting India exposure in USD may prefer the [Tata India Dynamic Equity Fund](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/tata-india-dynamic-equity-fund/). Another option is the [Sundaram India Mid Cap Fund](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/sundaram-india-mid-cap-fund-gift/).

Larger investors can compare options on our [GIFT City AIF tool](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-alternative-investment-funds/). Our regulatory details are on our [licences page](https://getbelong.com/licenses/).

## Bonds Within Your Wider Portfolio

Bonds steady a portfolio. They do not replace equity for long-term growth.

For the equity side, see our list of [best stocks](https://getbelong.com/blog/best-stocks/). IPO investors can explore our [IPO product](https://getbelong.com/products/ipo/) and our guide to the [GIFT City IPO](https://getbelong.com/blog/ipo/gift-city-ipo/).

Interest rate moves affect bonds and equities together. GIFT Nifty can show market mood early. Track it on our [live GIFT Nifty tool](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-nifty/) and [weekly GIFT Nifty outlook](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-nifty-live-weekly/).

For context, see our [GIFT Nifty historical data](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-nifty-historical-data/) and guide to [reading the GIFT Nifty chart](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-nifty-chart-explained/). Experienced investors can read about [GIFT Nifty futures](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-nifty-futures/) and our [futures and options product](https://getbelong.com/products/futures-and-options/).

## The Other Side of Debt

Bonds make you a lender. Most households are also borrowers.

Before taking a loan, check your [CIBIL score](https://getbelong.com/blog/cibil-score/). NRIs planning property should read our guide to [NRI home loans](https://getbelong.com/blog/nri-home-loans/). If you are comparing cards, see our list of the [best credit cards in India](https://getbelong.com/blog/best-credit-cards-in-india/).

## Our Final Take

The best online bond platform is a registered one that shows you everything about the bond.

For government securities, RBI Retail Direct is hard to beat. For corporate bonds, IndiaBonds and GoldenPi stand out for NRI clarity. Wint Wealth and Grip suit residents who want curated choices.

Whichever platform you use, check registration, read the offer document and spread your money. A slightly lower yield with a sound issuer is usually the better trade.
