In September 2026, NSE issued an unusual warning to investors. Some ETFs investing in overseas securities were trading at a substantial premium to their NAV.

NSE's [press release](https://nsearchives.nseindia.com//web/pressrelease/2026-09/PR_cc_25092026_20260925122830.pdf) asked investors to "exercise extreme caution" before buying. It warned that prices could fall abruptly for reasons unrelated to the underlying assets.

That warning tells you something important. When it comes to global ETFs, the platform you choose can matter as much as the ETF itself.

At [Belong](https://getbelong.com/), we help Indian investors build global portfolios every week.

This guide compares the best platforms to invest in global ETFs from India, route by route. It also covers what NRIs should do differently.

## First, What Is a Global ETF?

An ETF, or exchange traded fund, is a basket of securities that trades on a stock exchange like a share. A global ETF holds stocks or bonds from outside India.

Some track a broad index, like the S&P 500 or Nasdaq 100. Others track a theme, a region or a sector. Our guide to [global stock market indices](https://getbelong.com/blog/global-stock-market-indices/) explains the major ones.

Our comparison of the [Dow Jones, Nasdaq and S&P 500](https://getbelong.com/blog/dow-jones-vs-nasdaq-vs-sandp-500/) covers the US indices most ETFs follow.

There are four main ways to buy one from India. Each route uses different platforms.

## Our Top List

Rank

Platform

Best for

1

ICICI Direct Global Investing (US and other markets under LRS)

Widest market access for ETFs

2

Vested (US ETFs under LRS)

Simple, cash-only US ETF investing

3

INDmoney (US ETFs via GIFT City setup)

Fractional ETFs and regular SIPs

4

HDFC Securities Global Investing (US ETFs under LRS)

HDFC customers wanting a familiar setup

5

Any Indian broker (Indian-listed international ETFs)

7

We ranked these on product range, regulatory clarity, pricing transparency and fit for long-term investors.

**Tip:** Decide which ETF you want before you choose a platform. Some platforms simply do not list the ETF you are looking for.

## The Four Routes, Compared

US-listed ETFs under LRS

GIFT City platforms

Through IFSCA-regulated entities

Newer route, product lists still growing

GIFT City or domestic funds

Fund costs and limits on new money

Our guide on [GIFT City funds vs international ETFs](https://getbelong.com/blog/mutual-funds/gift-city-funds-vs-international-etfs/) compares the fund and ETF routes in more depth.

## Route 1: Indian-Listed International ETFs

These ETFs are launched by Indian fund houses and listed on NSE or BSE. You buy them through any Indian broker, just like a share.

Examples include the Motilal Oswal Nasdaq 100 ETF, listed on [Motilal Oswal's ETF page](https://www.motilaloswalmf.com/etf). Another is the Mirae Asset NYSE FANG+ ETF, described in its [scheme information document](https://www.miraeassetmf.co.in/docs/default-source/sid/54-sid-mirae-asset-nyse-fang-etf_30112024.pdf).

**Why investors like this route:** No foreign account, no LRS paperwork and no new app. You use your existing demat.

**The catch:** Indian mutual funds face overseas investment limits. As per NSE's press release, many have used up those limits, so new ETF units cannot easily be created.

When demand rises and supply cannot, the market price climbs above NAV. NAV is the actual value of the ETF's holdings per unit. A [Mint report](https://magzter.com/stories/newspaper/Mint-Bangalore/INTERNATIONAL-ETFS-ARE-TRADING-AT-A-PREMIUM-WHAT-SHOULD-INVESTORS-DO) linked these premiums to the regulatory caps and limited access to foreign markets.

**What can trigger a fall:** NSE named two triggers. One is an increase in overseas investment limits. The other is a change to how ETF price bands are set. From April 2027, the base price will use the previous day's NAV.

This change comes from a [SEBI circular on ETF base prices and price bands](https://www.sebi.gov.in/legal/circulars/jun-2026/norms-for-base-price-price-bands-call-auction-in-pre-open-session-and-close-out-procedure-for-exchange-traded-funds-etfs-_102121.html).

**Who this route suits:** Investors who check the NAV gap before every purchase and buy only when it is small.

**Tip:** Always compare the ETF's market price with its NAV before you buy. NSE suggests verifying NAVs on the exchange or AMFI website, or in your trading app.

### What about domestic international funds?

Many fund houses also run fund of funds that invest in these ETFs or in overseas funds. They face the same overseas limits, so subscriptions may be paused at times.

Our guides on [global mutual funds](https://getbelong.com/blog/mutual-funds/global-mutual-funds/) and on [feeder funds vs fund of funds](https://getbelong.com/blog/feeder-fund-vs-fund-of-funds-are-they-the-same-in-gift-city/) explain the structures.

## Route 2: US-Listed ETFs Under LRS

This route lets resident Indians buy ETFs listed directly on US exchanges. Money leaves India under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme.

As per [RBI's LRS FAQs](https://www.rbi.org.in/commonman/english/Scripts/FAQs.aspx?Id=1834), LRS covers resident individuals within an annual limit. A PAN is mandatory, and remittances for margin trading abroad are not allowed.

The upside is choice. US exchanges list a very wide range of ETFs, often with low costs and deep [liquidity](https://getbelong.com/blog/liquidity-meaning/). Liquidity means you can buy or sell easily without moving the price.

### ICICI Direct Global Investing

ICICI Direct's [global investment page](https://icicidirect.com/global-investment-services) lists stocks and ETFs across six markets. These include the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Interactive Brokers LLC acts as executing broker and custodian. The page says the facility is open to residents, corporates and NRIs who are ICICI Direct customers.

**How it compares:** It offers the widest market range here, which matters if you want ETFs listed outside the US. It needs an existing ICICI Direct account.

### Vested

Vested's [support page](https://support.vestedfinance.com/portal/en/kb/vested-us-stocks/about-us-stocks/us-investing-on-vested) names DriveWealth as its broker partner. It offers a cash account only and supports fractional investing.

**How it compares:** Simpler than ICICI Direct, focused only on US securities. A good fit if you mainly want broad US index ETFs.

### INDmoney

INDmoney's [US stocks page](https://www.indmoney.com/us-stocks) offers US stocks and ETFs with fractional investing and weekly or monthly SIPs. It names DriveWealth and Alpaca Securities as US clearing brokers.

The page describes its US stocks business as regulated by IFSCA in GIFT City.

**How it compares:** Strong for automated, regular investing in ETFs. SIPs need a Federal savings account in the app, as the page states.

### HDFC Securities Global Investing

HDFC Securities' [global investing page](https://www.hdfcsec.com/globalinvesting) lists US stocks and ETFs, powered by Vested. Fractional investing and themed baskets are available.

**How it compares:** Similar to Vested, within the HDFC relationship. Older Stockal-based accounts are routed separately.

### What this route means for your taxes

If you hold US-listed ETFs as a resident, you must report them in Schedule FA of your income tax return. The Income Tax Department's [note on foreign asset transparency](https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/sites/default/files/2024-11/Enhancing%20Tax%20Transparency%20on%20Foreign%20Assets%20and%20Income.pdf) explains this.

Non-disclosure can attract penalties under the Black Money Act. Our [tax filing service](https://getbelong.com/services/tax-filing/) can help you report correctly.

**What most guides miss:** US-listed and Ireland-listed ETFs differ in how dividends and some taxes apply to Indian investors. This is often called the ETF domicile question. Discuss it with a tax professional before choosing.

## Route 3: GIFT City Platforms

GIFT City is India's international financial services centre. Its regulator is IFSCA, not SEBI.

NSE describes [NSEIX Global Access IFSC Limited](https://www.nseindia.com/static/nseix-global-access-ifsc-limited/overview) as an IFSCA-registered Global Access Provider. Its overview lists global stocks and ETFs among the products it covers. Our guide to [GIFT City ETFs](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-city-etfs/) explains how ETFs work in this ecosystem.

**Why this route matters:** Investing happens through regulated entities within India's own IFSC. That can feel more familiar than an offshore broker.

**What to watch:** This is a newer route. Product lists, participating brokers and access rules are still evolving, so confirm details before investing.

## Route 4: GIFT City Mutual Funds

Not every investor needs to pick ETFs. A diversified fund can do the job.

GIFT City mutual funds are USD-denominated and managed by professional fund managers. Many hold global stocks or ETFs inside the fund.

**If you are a resident Indian**, this gives you USD exposure as a simpler alternative to many LRS setups. Funds often reviewed include the [DSP Global Equity Fund](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/dsp-global-equity-fund/) and the [Edelweiss Greater China Equity Fund](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/edelweiss-greater-china-equity-fund/).

**If you are an NRI**, GIFT City also offers India exposure in USD. Many NRIs look at the [Tata India Dynamic Equity Fund](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/tata-india-dynamic-equity-fund/) and the [Sundaram India Mid Cap Fund](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/sundaram-india-mid-cap-fund-gift/).

You can compare all options on our [GIFT City mutual funds tool](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/) and invest through our [mutual funds product](https://getbelong.com/products/mutual-funds/). Larger investors can explore our [GIFT City AIF tool](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-alternative-investment-funds/).

Our regulatory details are on our [licences page](https://getbelong.com/licenses/).

## Choosing a Route: Match It to Your Situation

If you are

Consider

Be careful about

A resident buying for the first time

GIFT City funds or a broad US ETF under LRS

Chasing themed ETFs early

A resident who wants rupee convenience

Indian-listed international ETFs

Paying a large premium to NAV

A resident wanting non-US markets

ICICI Direct Global Investing

Assuming every market lists the same ETFs

A resident investing monthly

INDmoney ETF SIPs or GIFT City fund SIPs

Forgetting LRS and TCS on each transfer

An NRI in the UAE

Local brokers or GIFT City

Using LRS platforms built for residents

Our [global investing SIP strategy](https://getbelong.com/blog/global-investment/sip-strategy/) guide explains how to invest regularly across these routes.

## Index ETFs or Themes? Start Broad

Global ETFs come in many flavours. Tech themes, clean energy, single countries and more.

For most investors, a broad index ETF is a better core than a narrow theme. Our guide on [S&P 500 vs global funds](https://getbelong.com/blog/global-investment/sandp-500-vs-global-funds/) compares two common starting points.

ETFs are usually passive. If you are weighing them against active funds, see our guide on [index funds vs actively managed funds](https://getbelong.com/blog/mutual-funds/index-funds-vs-actively-managed-mutual-funds/). You can also read our comparison of [US stocks vs global mutual funds](https://getbelong.com/blog/global-investment/us-stocks-vs-global-mutual-funds/).

**Tip:** One or two broad ETFs usually beat a collection of five themes. Simplicity makes rebalancing and tax filing far easier.

## A Mistake We See Often

Say you are 31, live in Hyderabad, and want Nasdaq exposure.

You search your broker app, find an Indian-listed Nasdaq ETF and buy it. You never check the NAV.

Months later, the index is flat but your ETF has fallen. The premium you paid has shrunk.

You did not lose money on Nasdaq companies. You lost it on the gap between price and value. This is exactly the risk NSE flagged in its press release.

What happens if you keep ignoring it? You may keep buying at peaks and selling after the gap closes. A quick NAV check before each purchase avoids most of this.

## Why Global ETFs Fit an Indian Portfolio

If your investments are entirely in India today, global ETFs do two useful jobs.

They spread risk across economies and sectors that India does not have. They also give you USD exposure. Our guide on [global diversification for Indian investors](https://getbelong.com/blog/global-diversification-explained-for-indian-investors-why-your-portfolio-needs-more-than-just-india/) explains why this matters.

When the rupee weakens, dollar assets gain value in rupee terms. Our guide on the [benefits of USD investments](https://getbelong.com/blog/global-investment/benefits-of-usd-investments/) covers this. Differences in the [interest rate](https://getbelong.com/blog/interest-rate-meaning/) cycle between India and the US also shape these currency moves.

Waiting has a cost too. Every year without diversification carries an [opportunity cost](https://getbelong.com/blog/opportunity-cost-meaning/). For the bigger picture, read how to [invest in the USA from India](https://getbelong.com/blog/invest-in-usa-from-india/).

## For NRIs: A Different Starting Point

If you are an NRI, LRS does not apply to you. It is a scheme for resident individuals only.

IFSCA's [section for NRIs and OCIs](https://ifsca.gov.in/Pages/Contents/NRIs%20section) covers this. NRIs can invest in global equities, ETFs and debt through IFSC exchanges, in foreign currency.

**If you live in the UAE**, you can also use local brokers. Our guide to [ETFs for UAE investors](https://getbelong.com/blog/etfs-for-uae-investors/) compares options.

**If you plan to return to India**, think about currency. Our guide on [currency risk in GIFT City funds for NRIs](https://getbelong.com/blog/currency-risk-in-gift-city-funds-nris-guide/) explains how to plan around it.

For dollar savings alongside ETFs, see our [USD fixed deposits](https://getbelong.com/products/usd-fixed-deposits/). Compare options in our guide on [GIFT City FD vs FCNR vs NRO and NRE FDs](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-city-fd-vs-fcnr-vs-nro-and-nre-fds/). You can also check our [NRI FD rates tool](https://getbelong.com/tools/nri-fd-rates/).

## Keep Your Indian Core Strong

Global ETFs work best as a complement, not a replacement, for your Indian portfolio.

For Indian equity ideas, see our list of [best stocks](https://getbelong.com/blog/best-stocks/). IPO investors can explore our [IPO product](https://getbelong.com/products/ipo/) and our guide to the [GIFT City IPO](https://getbelong.com/blog/ipo/gift-city-ipo/).

Some investors also hedge or trade index views through derivatives. That is a different skill set. Our [futures and options product page](https://getbelong.com/products/futures-and-options/) and guide to [GIFT Nifty futures](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-nifty-futures/) explain the basics.

## Follow Global Markets Calmly

Global ETF prices move overnight while India sleeps. GIFT Nifty helps you see how that may flow into Indian markets.

Track it on our [live GIFT Nifty tool](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-nifty/) and [weekly GIFT Nifty outlook](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-nifty-live-weekly/). Our [GIFT Nifty historical data](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-nifty-historical-data/) and guide to [reading the GIFT Nifty chart](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-nifty-chart-explained/) add context.

## Before You Move Money Abroad

Global investing sits on top of your wider finances.

Check your [CIBIL score](https://getbelong.com/blog/cibil-score/) if you plan any borrowing. NRIs buying property in India should read our guide to [NRI home loans](https://getbelong.com/blog/nri-home-loans/). For international spending, compare our list of the [best credit cards in India](https://getbelong.com/blog/best-credit-cards-in-india/).

## Our Final Take

The best platform for global ETFs depends on the route you choose.

For the widest range of US and international ETFs, LRS platforms like ICICI Direct, Vested and INDmoney lead. For rupee convenience, Indian-listed ETFs work, but only when you check the NAV gap first. For diversified USD exposure with less effort, GIFT City funds are worth a close look.

Pick your route, then your platform, then your ETF. In that order.
