Here is something many first-time Islamic investors do not expect. A fund with "Islamic" in its name can still be very concentrated.

The factsheet for one popular Shariah-compliant US equity ETF shows its top ten holdings make up about half the fund. One technology company alone is a large share.

That does not make it a bad choice. It just means "Shariah-compliant" answers one question, and you still have to ask the others.

At [Belong](https://getbelong.com/), we work with many UAE-based NRIs who want their investments to match their values. This guide compares the best Shariah-compliant ETFs for UAE investors. It covers how screening works, what most guides miss, and how to build a balanced portfolio.

## How Shariah Screening Works

Shariah-compliant funds avoid businesses considered unlawful under Islamic principles. They also avoid companies that rely heavily on debt.

BlackRock's [iShares MSCI World Islamic factsheet](https://www.blackrock.com/americas-offshore/en/literature/fact-sheet/iswd-ishares-msci-world-islamic-ucits-etf-fund-fact-sheet-en-lm.pdf) explains that Shariah funds do not pay interest. They avoid businesses deemed unlawful under Islamic principles.

SP Funds' [SPUS page](https://www.sp-funds.com/spus/) says its fund follows AAOIFI guidelines. AAOIFI is a standard-setting body for Islamic finance. SPUS also screens out companies with high debt compared with their market value.

That debt screen limits [leverage](https://getbelong.com/blog/leverage-meaning/), meaning companies borrowing heavily to grow. It can change the fund's mix of sectors compared with a normal index.

**Tip:** Read the screening method, not just the label. Different index providers apply different rules.

## Our Top List

Rank

ETF

Best for

1

iShares MSCI World Islamic UCITS ETF (ISWD/ISDW)

Broad global Islamic equity in a UCITS wrapper

2

iShares MSCI USA Islamic UCITS ETF (ISUS/ISDU)

US Islamic equity without a US-domiciled fund

3

SP Funds S&P 500 Sharia Industry Exclusions ETF (SPUS)

US Shariah equity on a US exchange, with published Shariah documents

4

HSBC Global Sukuk UCITS ETF (HSKD)

Shariah-compliant fixed income

5

HSBC onshore Islamic feeder funds

Investors who prefer UAE-regulated onshore funds

We ranked these on screening transparency, diversification, structure for non-US investors and access from the UAE.

## The ETFs, Compared

### 1\. iShares MSCI World Islamic UCITS ETF

The [ISWD factsheet](https://www.blackrock.com/americas-offshore/en/literature/fact-sheet/iswd-ishares-msci-world-islamic-ucits-etf-fund-fact-sheet-en-lm.pdf) shows it tracks the MSCI Developed World Islamic Index. It holds hundreds of companies across developed markets.

It is domiciled in Ireland and pays income semi-annually. It lists on the London Stock Exchange, with a USD line under the ticker ISDW.

**Who it suits:** Investors who want one broad Shariah-compliant equity core.

**How it compares:** More diversified across countries than the US-only funds below.

### 2\. iShares MSCI USA Islamic UCITS ETF

The [ISUS factsheet](https://ishares.com/uk/individual/en/literature/fact-sheet/isus-ishares-msci-usa-islamic-ucits-etf-fund-fact-sheet-en-gb.pdf) shows it tracks the MSCI US Islamic Index. It is Irish-domiciled, distributes semi-annually, and lists in London with a USD line under ISDU.

The factsheet also shows heavy concentration. The top ten holdings are about half the fund, and a single technology company is a large slice.

**Who it suits:** Investors who want US exposure in a UCITS structure.

**How it compares:** Narrower and more concentrated than ISWD. Pair it with broader holdings.

### 3\. SP Funds S&P 500 Sharia Industry Exclusions ETF (SPUS)

The [SPUS page](https://www.sp-funds.com/spus/) shows it tracks the S&P 500 Sharia Industry Exclusions Index. It lists on NYSE Arca.

The page offers a Certificate of Sharia Accreditation and a Sharia Auditor Report for download. It also links to a purification calculator.

**Who it suits:** Investors who want published Shariah documentation and use apps that offer US-listed ETFs.

**How it compares:** Clear Shariah documentation. As a US-listed fund, it raises the estate and withholding points covered below.

### 4\. HSBC Global Sukuk UCITS ETF (HSKD)

HSBC's [factsheet](https://www.assetmanagement.hsbc.co.uk/api/v1/download/document/ie0009u8ibu8/gb/en/factsheet) shows it tracks the FTSE IdealRatings Sukuk Index. It invests only in sukuk approved by its Shariah Committee.

It is Irish-domiciled, pays semi-annually and lists on the London Stock Exchange.

**Who it suits:** Investors who want a Shariah-compliant alternative to conventional bonds.

**How it compares:** Brings stability to an equity-heavy Islamic portfolio. It is newer, so check trading volume.

### 5\. HSBC Onshore Islamic Feeder Funds

These are not ETFs, but they matter for UAE investors. HSBC's [release on onshore UAE funds](https://www.about.hsbc.ae/news-and-media/hsbc-is-the-first-global-asset-manager-to-launch-onshore-funds-in-the-uae) lists an Islamic Global Equity Index Feeder Fund and a Global Sukuk Feeder Fund.

The release says these funds serve retail and institutional investors in the UAE.

**Who it suits:** Investors who prefer an onshore UAE fund over buying a London-listed ETF.

**How it compares:** Simpler access through local channels. Check fees and dealing terms in the fund documents.

## What Most Guides Miss

### Concentration is a real risk

Debt screens can remove many banks and some other sectors. What remains may tilt heavily towards technology.

The ISUS factsheet shows this clearly. That concentration can lift returns in good years and hurt in bad ones.

Our guides on [thematic vs broad market funds](https://getbelong.com/blog/mutual-funds/thematic-funds-vs-broad-market-funds/) and [sectoral vs broad market funds](https://getbelong.com/blog/mutual-funds/sectoral-mutual-funds-vs-broad-market-funds/) explain the trade-off.

### Purification is your job

Even compliant companies may earn a small amount of non-compliant income. Many scholars advise donating that portion, known as purification.

SP Funds offers a purification calculator on its SPUS page. Ask your fund provider how they suggest handling it.

### Platform compliance is separate from fund compliance

A Shariah-compliant fund does not make the platform Islamic. Sarwa's [about page](https://www.sarwa.co/en/about) states it does not hold an Islamic Window endorsement from ADGM's FSRA.

By contrast, Baraka's [website](https://getbaraka.com/) states it holds a DFSA Islamic Window endorsement. If platform-level compliance matters to you, check this before choosing.

**Tip:** Look at three layers. The fund's screening, its Shariah board or auditor, and the platform's own Islamic status.

## A Pattern We See With UAE-Based NRIs

Say you work in Dubai and invest only in one US Islamic equity ETF. Over a few strong years, your portfolio grows quickly.

Then technology stocks fall sharply. Because your fund leaned heavily on a few tech names, your portfolio drops more than you expected.

You had chosen for faith, which was right. But you had not chosen for diversification.

What happens if this is ignored? You may sell in a panic and lock in losses. Adding a global Islamic fund and some sukuk would have softened the fall.

If you want help reviewing your Shariah-compliant mix, our team at [Belong](https://getbelong.com/) can help you compare options.

## A Simple Shariah-Compliant Mix

Investor type

Equity core

Stabiliser

Conservative

Global Islamic equity, smaller share

Larger sukuk allocation

Balanced

Global Islamic equity

Moderate sukuk allocation

Growth-focused

Global plus US Islamic equity

Small sukuk allocation

This is an illustration, not a recommendation. Your mix depends on your goals and timeline.

Our guides on [NRI portfolios by risk level](https://getbelong.com/blog/nri-investment-portfolio-by-risk-conservative-balanced-and-aggressive-examples/) and the [ideal NRI investment portfolio](https://getbelong.com/blog/ideal-nri-investment-portfolio/) go deeper.

## UCITS vs US-Listed for UAE Investors

The IRS page on [estate tax for nonresidents](https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/some-nonresidents-with-us-assets-must-file-estate-tax-returns) lists shares in US-organised companies as US-situated assets. Estates above a threshold must file a US estate tax return.

The IRS's [Publication 515](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p515) covers withholding on payments to nonresident aliens. That affects dividends from US-listed funds.

This is why many UAE investors look first at Irish-domiciled options like ISWD, ISUS and HSKD. Speak to a cross-border tax adviser before choosing.

**Where to buy:** Sarwa's [help page](https://help.sarwa.co/hc/en-us/articles/4410508443281-What-assets-are-supported-in-Sarwa-Trade) says Sarwa Trade excludes UCITS ETFs. For London-listed funds, many investors use international brokers. Interactive Brokers' DIFC branch appears on the [DFSA public register](https://www.dfsa.ae/public-register/firms/interactive-brokers-uk-limited-difc-branch).

## Judging Performance Fairly

Compare a Shariah-compliant fund with the right benchmark. Comparing it with a conventional index can mislead you.

Our guides on [benchmarks to compare GIFT City funds](https://getbelong.com/blog/mutual-funds/benchmarks-to-compare-gift-city-funds/) and [choosing the right benchmark](https://getbelong.com/blog/what-benchmarks-should-be-used-for-gift-city-investments/) explain the principle. Our piece on [past returns vs consistency](https://getbelong.com/blog/mutual-funds/past-returns-vs-consistency/) shows why one great year should not decide your choice.

Long-term price [appreciation](https://getbelong.com/blog/appreciation-meaning/) matters, but so does how bumpy the ride is.

## For NRIs: India and GIFT City

**If you are an NRI**, you may also want India exposure. GIFT City funds are USD-denominated and regulated by IFSCA. Check each fund's documents for Shariah status, as not all funds are Shariah-compliant.

Our guides on [choosing the right GIFT City fund](https://getbelong.com/blog/mutual-funds/choose-the-right-gift-city-fund/) and [evaluating USD mutual funds](https://getbelong.com/blog/mutual-funds/evaluate-usd-mutual-funds/) help. Our piece on [active vs passive GIFT City funds](https://getbelong.com/blog/mutual-funds/active-vs-passive-gift-city-funds/) explains the structures.

Funds NRIs often review include the [Tata India Dynamic Equity Fund](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/tata-india-dynamic-equity-fund/) and the [Sundaram India Mid Cap Fund](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/sundaram-india-mid-cap-fund-gift/). Global options include the [DSP Global Equity Fund](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/dsp-global-equity-fund/) and the [Edelweiss Greater China Equity Fund](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/edelweiss-greater-china-equity-fund/).

Browse all options on our [GIFT City mutual funds tool](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-mutual-funds/) and invest through our [mutual funds product](https://getbelong.com/products/mutual-funds/). Larger investors can compare our [GIFT City AIF tool](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-city-alternative-investment-funds/). Our regulatory details are on our [licences page](https://getbelong.com/licenses/).

For dollar savings, our [USD fixed deposits](https://getbelong.com/products/usd-fixed-deposits/) are one option. Compare them in our guide on [GIFT City FD vs FCNR vs NRO and NRE FDs](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-city-fd-vs-fcnr-vs-nro-and-nre-fds/). Our [NRI FD rates tool](https://getbelong.com/tools/nri-fd-rates/) shows bank rates. Check each product's Shariah status separately.

**If you plan to return to India**, residents must report foreign assets in Schedule FA. The Income Tax Department's [note on foreign assets](https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/sites/default/files/2024-11/Enhancing%20Tax%20Transparency%20on%20Foreign%20Assets%20and%20Income.pdf) explains this. Our [tax filing service](https://getbelong.com/services/tax-filing/) can help.

## Values-Based Investing Beyond Shariah

Some investors care about both Shariah principles and wider values like sustainability. Our guide to [ESG funds](https://getbelong.com/blog/mutual-funds/esg-funds/) explains how ESG screening differs.

Our piece on [thematic vs diversified funds](https://getbelong.com/blog/mutual-funds/thematic-mutual-funds-vs-diversified-funds/) helps you avoid over-narrow portfolios. For broader markets, see our guide to [emerging market funds](https://getbelong.com/blog/mutual-funds/emerging-market-funds/) and [growth investments for NRIs](https://getbelong.com/blog/growth-investments-for-nris/).

## For Resident Indians Reading This

If you live in India, these ETFs are bought through foreign brokers under LRS. Our guide on how to [invest in the USA from India](https://getbelong.com/blog/invest-in-usa-from-india/) explains the routes.

## Other Considerations

Before borrowing to invest, remember that debt is a [liability](https://getbelong.com/blog/liability-meaning/). Shariah principles also discourage interest-based borrowing.

For Indian equity ideas, see our list of [best stocks](https://getbelong.com/blog/best-stocks/), and check Shariah status separately. IPO investors can explore our [IPO product](https://getbelong.com/products/ipo/) and our guide to the [GIFT City IPO](https://getbelong.com/blog/ipo/gift-city-ipo/).

Derivatives raise their own Shariah questions. Our [futures and options product](https://getbelong.com/products/futures-and-options/) and guide to [GIFT Nifty futures](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-nifty-futures/) explain how they work.

Our [live GIFT Nifty tool](https://getbelong.com/tools/gift-nifty/) and [weekly GIFT Nifty outlook](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-nifty-live-weekly/) help UAE-based investors follow Indian markets. Our [GIFT Nifty historical data](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-nifty-historical-data/) and guide to [reading the GIFT Nifty chart](https://getbelong.com/blog/gift-nifty-chart-explained/) add context.

If you plan to buy property in India, check your [CIBIL score](https://getbelong.com/blog/cibil-score/) and read our guide to [NRI home loans](https://getbelong.com/blog/nri-home-loans/). For Indian cards, see our list of the [best credit cards in India](https://getbelong.com/blog/best-credit-cards-in-india/).

## Our Final Take

For most UAE investors, ISWD offers the broadest Shariah-compliant equity core in a UCITS structure. ISUS and SPUS add US exposure, with very different structures. HSKD brings sukuk-based stability.

Check the screening method, the Shariah board or auditor, the platform's own Islamic status and your concentration risk.

Faith and diversification can work together. Build for both.
